Fantasy Art or Phantasy Art? - the birth of the word...

... it all started with "phantos": visible. This word originates from "phantazesthai" which means "to appear". That strange verb was born from "phantasi" meaning "imagination" in Greek. Later adopted by the Latin language to be transformed into "Phantasia". We finally come to the elaborate end of the evolution of this word as "fantasie" (old French) which was also taken over by the English language.

Today the word can be spelt either with "ph" or an "f" and can end either in "ie" or "y".

Here's my definition of the word "phantasy"...

It can mean so many things at once but is understood by the general public mainly as some wonderful (or terrible), nonexistant thing ....something which can only materialize in the forgotten and hidden valleys of our brains (which are said to be used to only 3% of their capacity - just think of what we could do with the other 97%!)

Most people see imagination and the thought of fantasy as something that cannot be, just places and creatures that we create in order to escape from the every day life that seems to plague us. But fantasy is very real indeed.

It is very sad that "grown ups" "grow out of" imagination, labelling it as simple childishness. I am sure we (as so called "grown ups") would lead much happier and healthier lives if we just kept some of the fantastic ideas and thoughts that make children the merry and carefree creatures they are. How exciting and liberating it is to have ones' own fantastic world, a place where reality can play, relax and be one with the so called unreality.

Here's my definition of "art"...

I have learned that everything we do and everything that "is" is an art in it's self (whether good or bad). We just don't value this thought nowadays because we get too stuck in a certain rythmn that tends to supress our time for good thoughts. We take the art of smiling, laughing or just being ourselves for granted.

The type of art for which my web-site stands is the art of the "ability to capture shapes, shadows, light, life, feelings, emotions and meanings" on a simple and patient sheet of paper.

I have written a little about how these beings on paper come about and what can inspire a person to draw or to do the things they like and are good at. I must admit, it is quite a difficult thing trying to interpret one's own work. It's quite hard putting an overall term to these creatures. For one thing because I don't sit down with a specific picture in my head saying ... "OK now I'm going to draw an elf". They just sort of materialise infront of me... and it all starts with inspiration.
