Elves and elven images alive in lore and literature...

Fantasy Art, elf image

I must say that when I think of the term "Elves" I cannot find a more beautiful meaning than that provided by JRR Tolkien...

"Elves, being the first beings to awake on earth, perceived the light of the stars first. So starlight, the Elves love best. And when this light entered their eyes, it was held there, so that it shone from those eyes ever after. And thus the fairest and wisest race was created."

What imagination can better that blissful description on of this truly angelic race! Tolkien continues...

"Elves would have and create more beauty than any other earthly creatures and possess the greatest happiness and deepest sorrow. Immortal and ageless, so they might live as long as the earth lived. They are not to know sickness and pestilence but they have bodies like the Earth in substance that could be destroyed either by metal or die of a broken heart. With the same size as men and yet stronger in spirit and limb, not to grow weak with age, only more wiser and more fair. Elves walk in a light that is like the glow of the moon. Their hair is like spun gold or woven silver or polished jet, and starlight glimmers all about them, on their hair, eyes, silken clothes and jewelled hands. The sound of their voices is various and beautiful and subtle as water. Elves excel best in speech, song and poetry..."

"...The Elves have gone out of this world and now live in the Eternal Light of the Undying Lands "Elvenhome", where they build cities with domes of silver, streets of gold and stairs of crystal."

I must add to this that every one should make their own description or picture of Elves, unless you, like me, have also become lost in the fabulous ideas of other people.
